Staying In Touch...

I'm curious... How do you stay in touch with parents on a regular basis? I've tried newsletters, and they are starting to get boring. I feel like I'm telling them the same thing every week. In spelling, we're.... In reading, we're.... Spelling test on Friday.... Same old, same old. I utilized the blog component of my school website a few years ago. Parents seemed to like it, but again, it seemed like I was just posting reminders and such.

SO. What do YOU do?

I've seen some teachers that have created a Twitter for their classroom, but Twitter and I don't get along. I just don't understand it. But what I DO love, is Instagram. So, it struck me!

Why not create an, obviously private, Instagram account just for parents. I can snap pictures throughout the day on my iPad, then plop them right onto Instagram. Parents can literally know what we're doing in real time. I'm seriously geeking out, I'm so excited. I really hope it works and doesn't just flop on its face.

Do you utilize any type of social media in your classroom? Do tell!! I'm anxiously awaiting the alternative to the newsletter!

I love your Instagram idea. I thought of trying it, too but haven't finalized everything. How are the parentsb responding? We do a weekly newsletter, but I also use remind101.com to anonymously send text messages to the whole class. It's a good way to remind about a field trip, special day, big test, etc. The site assigns you a generic (for lack of a better term) phone number. Parents sign up to receive the texts. They can't respond and don't have your personal number. The text come through starting with your user name then the message. I really like it. Our school also has a remind101 account to send general messages.

I also use Remind101, although I haven't been that good about using it, since only about 1/3 of my families signed up. I do like how easy it is to use, and FREE! :)

I'm loving the idea of having an Instagram just for parents, never thought of that. I do the same, newsletters, random reminder letters sent home, a class website...but Instagram, I think I just may try that. Enjoyed reading your posts, I'm glad I found it and now I am one of your followers, woohoo.:)
